“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.”
Michael Jordan

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”
Oprah Winfrey

“In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.”
Warren Buffett

“Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right.”
Henry Ford

Jordan, Winfrey, Buffett, and Ford –What do you think of when you hear these names? I always think of success, genius, wealth, and excellence. These four are like entrepreneurial gods (and goddess) to me…everything they touch turn to gold. But guess what? Contrary to popular belief, these four are very familiar with the term “failure”. Michael Jordan missed more than 9,000 shots in his career. Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network was declared a “flop” by the media after its first year on air. Warren Buffett’s purchase of Dexter shoes was considered his worst purchase ever and resulted in billions of dollars lost. Henry Ford’s first company was unsuccessful and he abandoned his second company. Surprised, huh?

The big lessons here are 1) learn from your mistakes 2) let your passion for your business/craft push you to the limits and 3) you’re only as successful as you think you are. Failure must be expected on your road to success…it’s kind of like your rite of passage into that world. You may find yourself starting three or four businesses, until you find the perfect ingredients for your biggest accomplishment.

What do these four quotes mean to you? Have you experienced any major failures as you were starting your business?
